Wednesday, August 30, 2006 Mixed Feeling About Merdeka... Assalamualaikum... Tomorrow is the anniversary of Malaysia's Independence Day. A day that signifies a lot and meant a lot more, for the people who had shed blood and tears, going through the pains to achieve such a great accomplishment. To these people, 31st of August 1957 marked the beginning of an era of hopes, prosperity and establishment for the people of the nation. Deep in their hearts, they cherish the day as the starting point for a better life for their offspring, the next generation, who will be responsible to modernize the country and bring it up to par with all the respected nation in the world. 49 years down the road, and personally, I think this great hopes of our forefathers, are far from fulfilled. Not to denies all the improvement in life standard that most of us experience nowadays, but in term of being a great nation in its true meaning, we are still far off the par. A great nation in my point of view, is a nation in which every single citizen enjoys a tolerable amount of satisfactory lifestyle, where people have proper shelter, affordable healthcare, equal opportunity of education, and a law-abiding freedom. A great nation should be self-sustaining economically, should be strong in view and action, and should be politically sound. A great nation too, should be well govern, where every single people in power are efficient in their services, and are always put the interest of the nation well above the interest of their own. But too bad, all these definition of 'great nation' has never been an agenda in our 49-years-old Malaysia. For all I known, an agenda demand a plan, without a good plan, agenda is all bullshit and equal to none. 49 years is a very long time, a more than sufficient time frame for our country to handle all the basic issues of the people (food, shelter, education), but still our poverty level is more than 1%. On a very simple mathematical point of view, a 1% of population trapped in poverty equal to 250,000 people, a very staggering number. How could we allow this situation to exist, when we are about to celebrate the anniversary of the nation? Freedom in life should be widespread to all, and freedom to live properly should ranks high above all. That is the reason why I never celebrate Merdeka anymore. For I couldn't bring myself to celebrate something which is skin-deep, something which is nothing more than a camouflage to a bigger issues at hand. But unless and until the people at large recognize the need to establish a good and caring government, a great nation in the name of Malaysia would never be materialized. People, Happy Holidays... *pesan orang tua-tua, berseronok biarlah beringat ;) nesloice walks through at 5:30 PM. |
